New MMC Specifications:
The new v4.3 System Specification is now available free of
charge!
Multiple Interface Card (miCARD™) v1.0 is now available for
purchase!
MultiMediaCards use ROM technology for read-only applications and Flash technology for read/write applications. The cards are fast and energy efficient for excellent system performance in mobile phones, digital cameras and other portable device products.
The MMCA has the MMCplus™, MMCmobile™ and MMCmicro™ Cards available which are based on the MMC System Specification 4.1.
The MMCplus Card, at 24x32x1.4mm, and MMCmobile Card, at 24x18 x1.4mm, both have these advanced features:
Highest clock frequency:
Extending the maximum clock frequencies from 20 MHz to 26 MHz and 52 MHz allows higher data transfer rate and better compatibility to mobile phone architectural requirements. Operating at 52 MHz in x8 bit mode, data can be transferred at up to 52MB/sec, (or 416 Mbits/sec) a 20-fold improvement from the previous standards. This is the highest data transfer rate of all existing memory card standards available today.
Wider bus-width:
The new multiple (x1 bit, x4 bit and x8 bit) bus-width feature allows for host design flexibility and higher data transfer bandwidth at a given clock speed, to accommodate the more data intensive content in mobile phones and digital cameras. Additionally, the MMCmobile Card is the first small form factor memory card standard to offer dual-voltage operation at both 3/3.3V and 1.8V. This is especially important for new generations of mobile phones and small consumer electronics devices that require lower power consumption. It meets the toughest space saving requirements, and is fully compatible with the original MMC and MMCplus Cards when used with an extender typically supplied with the card. MMCmobile is also fully compatible with the original Reduced Size MMC (RS-MMC, 20 MHz, x1 bit). In fact, while the new specification has 13 pins to accommodate the additional features, it is backward compatible with all previous 7-pin versions.
